Practice Background

Gatton Medical Centre started in 1973 by Dr John Hudson.  There was one other General Practitioner in Gatton.  Dr Hudson also had medical responsibilities for the local public hospital.  There were no nursing homes in Gatton.  Now there are 7 Doctors here and 16 or so GP’s and 1 full time public Doctor at the hospital, plus 2 nursing homes. Originally, the doctors did obstetric anaesthetic surgery, local GMO duties as well as general practice.  Nowadays, they are fully confined to our surgery doing acute minor illness; considerable social and mental problems, plus a considerable aged home care load, but no acute hospital work. The Practice is completely dependent on overseas trained Doctors for full and part time work and for locums. The Practice interest areas are determined by patient requirements.  Doctors are doing more industrial medicine these days so that requires more emphasis in this area. Mental health has always been a big problem area and mostly the doctors have to do what they can at a local level. Doctors at Gatton Medical service the whole of the Lockyer Valley from as west as Helidon, east to Hatton Vale, north to Esk and to the rim of the great divide in the south.
